Who we are

NHS Innovations South West Limited (NISW) is a private, not-for-profit, company limited by guarantee.  Until April 2013 NISW was fully funded by the South West Strategic Health Authority, but it is now operating with a NHS Trust membership model and income from additional sources.  NISW offers commercial support to NHS staff by providing a service to identify, protect and develop innovative healthcare solutions and accompanying intellectual property, sourced from within the NHS. It also provides business development consultancy on a commercial basis to non-NHS clients with an interest in the NHS as a collaborator and / or as a customer and commercial marketplace and can help with the adoption of recognised new technologies and systems where they have proven patient and system benefits.

NISW was set up in June 2006 and is based in offices in Old Sarum, Salisbury. It works via a small team of commercially-experienced Business Development Managers who support a network of Trust Innovation Leaders (TILs) and provide other complimentary services to organisations in the region. The TILs are embedded in NHS Trusts and work on developing innovation and enterprise within their organisations, having been trained by NISW  and achieved the CMI-accredited Diploma in 'Innovation Leadership and Change Management'.

The main goal of NISW is to facilitate the identification, creation, adoption and spread of innovations, firstly within
the NHS in the South West of England, secondly throughout the NHS nationally and, lastly, throughout healthcare services globally.

Mike McMillan - Chief Executive Officer

Mike brings a wide experience in the Healthcare and wellbeing market with the capability of facilitating the development of solutions that meet the needs of the ultimate user.  With an original lifescience research background in the NHS followed by a commercial business career against the backdrop of working at the UKs leading technology organisation, QinetiQ, Mike can bring a rounded perspective to an opportunity.

Angus Donald - Business Development Manager

Angus has been with NISW since January 2010 and has a wealth of commercial experience in the medical disposables, medical devices and consumer healthcare markets built up over 25 years in a range of marketing, sales, and business development roles with blue chip market leaders such as Smith & Nephew, Nutricia, Invacare and Omega Pharma BV.  As well as extensive experience of marketing and selling into the UK NHS, he has developed and launched new products into most of the major healthcare markets around the world, particularly across Europe and Asia.

Derek Kelly - Business Development Manager

Derek was a microbiologist in the NHS before moving into the commercial world.  He has more than 25 years of senior international marketing, sales and general management experience gained primarily in the diagnostics and medical device sectors, in companies ranging from multinationals to SME manufacturing companies and start-up's.  For a number of years before joining NISW, Derek was self-employed, providing interim management, marketing consultancy and market research services to the medical industry.

Alan McLeod, Business Development Manager

Alan McLeod has worked as a manager in the medical devices industry for over twenty-five years with responsibilities for research and development, product management as well as regulatory affairs.  He has been responsible for taking implants all the way from first concept to CE marked Medical Device.  He is co-inventor of 21 patents for a wide variety of textile implants including an artificial cervical disc, tissue augmentation devices and an endovascular stent graft. 


Alan first joined NHS Innovations South West (NISW) in 2012 before transferring over to the South West Academic Health Science Network (SW AHSN) when the AHSNs were set up in 2013.  He made good use of his time with the AHSN working with the Innovation Leads to develop Regional approaches to issues such as Revenue Share and IP Ownership.  With the AHSN now focusing on the adoption and spread of innovations, Alan been seconded by the AHSN to NISW in order to continue his work supporting early stage NHS innovations as part of a closer alignment between the two organisations.


Rod Howells, Training & Consulting Associate

Rod has worked with over 90 NHS organisations over the last ten years, delivering NISW's bespoke and accredited training programmes. Rod is specifically interested at the practicalities of creating the right environment for innovation to flourish on an individual, team and organisation level.

Outside of the NHS environment, Rod has over 17 years' experience in innovation and commercialisation in a wide range of sectors including manufacturing, logistics, process engineering and fabrication, aerospace and defence, information technology, environmental, biotech, and healthcare industries.

Rod has worked with clients in both the private sector and public sector in the UK, Europe and in the Middle East. Rod's private sector clients include: Mondelez, TNT, Speedo, Royal Mint and the Welsh Government and numerous SMEs. In the public sector, Rod has worked in collaboration with wide range of universities, professional bodies and research centres in the UK and overseas.
